Self Consolidating Concrete

Ratio Master and Quiet Crete additive system will allow a precaster to produce self consolidating concrete that has an excellent surface appearance without the use of vibration.

SCC made with Ratio Master and Quiet Crete will have the following benefits:

High quality surface finish

Little or no bug holes

Consistent finish appearance;
patching and discoloration
minimized

Reduced finishing labor time and
cost

Concrete will replicate the form
surface and special mold textures

Self-placing
No segregation
Reduced placing labor and costs

Increased flow
Flows easily through highly congested, heavily reinforced areas
Assured consolidation without segregation

Strength characteristics
Compressive Strength:   28-75 MPa   4000- 9000 psi
(Varies with materials and proportions)

Rheology

Highly fluid, self consolidating

Slump Flow:   Vertical 18" - 25"
                      Architectural 28" - 35"

Slump flow is determined by measuring the diameter of the concrete "spread" after removing the slump cone. Fill a conventional slump cone by continuously pouring mix into the cone without stopping. Do not rock the cone, and lift the cone vertically in a quick and uniform speed. Measure the diameter of the concrete on a level non-absorbing surface.

Mix quality is confirmed by observing uniform distribution of coarse aggregate at the center and at the edges, and by observing a lack of water or cement paste bleed at the edge.

Mixing

After initial wetting of the cement, add Ratio Master. Mix for three to four minutes and then add Quiet Crete. Add water to the desired slump flow. The best mix has only one addition of water after all the other ingredients are in the mixer. One may have to make a trial batch to determine the correct amount of water. Then repeat the batch using the correct amount of water in one addition.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What's in it for me?
Noise reduction, productivity gains, safety (fewer people required around the formwork), reduced finishing and rework costs, a higher quality finished product, and increased reputation in your area.

Where is SCC most useful?
Surfaces requiring a very good finish, heavily reinforced structures or members, and structures or member with complex forming, especially in difficult/restricted locations.

For example, where a lower slump mix is placed in a densely reinforced mold, one has to use extensive vibration to consolidate the form. The higher vibration leads to bleeding and settlement. The elimination of vibration in casting pretension elements will result in much higher quality concrete and reduce excessive end slip of the top strand.

Can SCC be pumped?
Yes. A Taiwan telecommunications building was built using structural members which consisted of a 3-meter steel tube filled with dense rebar and filled with SCC. The SCC was pumped from the bottom up in 100-meter lifts.

Is shrinkage with SCC the same as for standard concrete?
Yes, for concrete with the same materials and water/cement ratio.

Is SCC good for all applications?
No, sloping slabs will not be good due to the physics and where you can not afford to utilize higher cement paste percentage in your mix.

Can you use pozzolans to lower cement paste cost or increase strength performance?
Yes, Ratio Master and Quiet Crete perform well with fly ash, metakaolin, slag and silica fume because of superior water reduction capability and superior slump control.
